500 ACTIVITIES FOR THE BAND -- ALL DETAILS IN THIS ISSUE
Parade Saturday May 29
The band will be marching in the 500 parade in conjunction with the Crossman Communities Float When Johnnie Comes Marching Home. We will not be using a full flag corps at the parade so we need to concentrate on having playing members -- especially youth -- join us as we once again take part in Indianapolis's biggest parade!
Arrangements have been made to use the parking lot at the Scout Service Center (1900 North Meridian) as a meeting location. Arrive there by 9:00 am so you can get in full uniform, including campaign hats (weather permitting). Once we are uniformed and set to go we will "march" from the Scout office to the Tyndall Armory which is our assigned staging area. We need to be at Tyndall by 10:00 am so we will be leaving the scout parking lot no later than 9:45 am. The parade will start at 12:00 noon and when we have finished marching, we will end up at the Scout Service Center parking lot. Parents should plan to be there no later than 3:00 p.m. to pick you up.
If your high school is marching in the parade -- your FIRST obligation is to your school -- after all your grade is dependent on your participation! This is another reason we need as many youth as possible who are NOT marching with their school to march with us. In order to prepare for the parade plan to attend rehearsals on May 2, 16 and 23 so we can look our best. Those receiving the newsletter that are in the Flag Corps, plan to attend rehearsals on the 16th and 23rd to practice with the band for race day.

500 Race Sunday May 30
The band AND flag corps will be marching in the pre-race activities at the Indianapolis 500 on Sunday May 30th. For those that have been around for a while the "routine" is pretty much the same as it has been the last few years. For those new to the band -- and as a reminder here is the schedule and what needs to be done.
Enclosed in this newsletter (instead of a coupon) is a registration form to let us know of your intent to participate in the 500 race activity. We have three school busses lined up to take us to the track -- to help offset the expense of the buses we require EACH person attending to purchase a ticket @ $10.00. No ticket - no bus seat, lunch or seat at the race. This year we are attempting to offer prepaid tickets. Fill out the form enclosed and return it to Keith Hartzog at rehearsals in May. YOU WILL NEED A TICKET COME RACE DAY. Keith will also be available prior to our departure on Sunday May 30th .
Meet at Camp Belzer no later than 5:00 AM on Sunday May 30th! Buses are due to pick us up at 5:15 so we can arrive at Builders Square (I-65 and Lafayette Road) by 6:15 AM to join the police escorted caravan of bands. If you live on the west side of town you can meet us at Builders Square (be there by 6 am) and we will plan to send a return bus back there at the end of the race. Please indicate whether you are going to meet us at Builders Square on the form. If you are NOT returning with the band you will need a SIGNED STATEMENT from you parent/guardian or you WILL NOT be allowed to leave.
Once we finish the activities for pre-race you can change into casual clothes, pick up your lunch, race ticket and enjoy the race. Report back to the buses hour after the end of the race. We will return to Camp Belzer approximately 2 hours after the end of the race.
Tour Updates -- ADD A DAY!
The 1999 Tour is approaching and there are a few seats left on the bus. ALL applications MUST be turned in by May 31st so final arrangements and guarantees can be made for our lodging and meals. Many exciting activities are being planned -- you won't want to miss out on this HISTORIC tour!
The tour dates have changed by 1 day -- we will be returning Sunday July 18th rather than Saturday July 17th. There is a significant reason we are doing this -- we have been asked to participate in the 30th anniversary of the Apollo XI mission (first moon landing) at Kennedy Space Center. The crew from Apollo XI will be in attendance and we will be playing for the ceremonies marking this historic event.
Highlights of the itinerary are as follows: July 10th -- Graceland Mansion tour and concert in Memphis, TN. July 11th -- Tupelo, Mississippi -- concert at Natchez Trace Visitors Center / Chickasaw Indian Village site, Tupelo National Battlefield, then on to Birmingham, Alabama with a tour of the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute and an authentic southern dinner catered by Bro Chets. July 12th -- Florida State Capitol tour and concert in Tallahassee, Florida then dinner at Barnacle Bill's. July 13th -- Concert in Winter Park, Florida and a mystery dinner location. July 14th -- All day at Universal Studios Florida with a concert schedule in one of the backlot areas -- will we be in New York, Paris or where? July 15th -- full day tour, IMAX and hands on exhibits at Kennedy Space Center. July 16th -- Apollo XI anniversary activities -- day at Coco Beach, Florida and a visit to Ron Jon's Surf Shop. July 17th -- Atlanta, Georgia and back home on July 18th.
If there are families that would like to meet up with us in Florida please let Bill know as soon as possible (542-8057) We will attempt to arrange the special rates for the Universal and Kennedy tours as well as meals and lodging if needed. Reservations MUST be made and payment RECEIVED at shakedown on Sunday June 13th so final numbers can be reserved and guaranteed.
ALL tour participants are expected to attend Shakedown on Sunday June 13th from 9 am - 6 pm at Camp Belzer. At that time, all fees are to be paid, medicals turned in and updated. Shirts, hats and "tour guides" will be distributed at the Shakedown. Bring your instrument as a great deal of the time will be spent in putting together the tour show. Following the shakedown activities, ADULTS and YOUTH that are going on tour must complete the youth Protection Training. If you have a current certificate (must be renewed yearly) please let Maurice Heitzman know the date and you will be excused. Otherwise, everyone will be expected to complete the training following Shakedown.
As of this writing, there are 45 applications in hand and 13 "maybes" -- we only have one (1) fifty-five passenger bus and a two seat truck -- you do the math. If you want to go -- don't delay any longer in getting an application and money to Bill.
Grand Rapids, Michigan Trip
The band has accepted an invitation to join a troop's 50th anniversary and the town of Byron Center, Michigan festival on Saturday July 31st. "Mr. Mike" and Illni-Swallow is chartered to get us there safely. Preliminary information for now: cost will be $75.00 per person (bus, lodging and meals). We will leave Camp Belzer on Friday July 30th at 6:00 p.m. and return on Sunday August 1st at approximately 6:00 p.m.. More information will be given at rehearsals and future newsletters.
Eagle Project Help Needed
Shawn Smock will be working on his Eagle Project on Saturday May 8th starting at 10:00 a.m.. If you can help out, call Shawn at 738-3595.
He will be placing a flag pole and landscaping an area at Franklin Memorial Christian Church -- 1720 North Graham Road. Take I-65 south to the Whiteland exit then west until you reach a four way stop sign. Turn left at the 4 way stop.

Band to Make History July 4th ?
To give everyone advance notice of the band's attempt to set another "first" -- three (3) Parades in one day in three (3) different cities!
The BBBC board accepted the challenge of during three fourth of July parades in one day -- on the condition we travel by bus to get us there safely and together! Here's the plan:
The Lawrence, Indiana 150th birthday celebration parade steps off at 10:00 am on Saturday July 3rd (Meet time at 8:30 am). When we finish Lawrence parade, we will reconvene at Camp Belzer where "Mr. Mike" and his trusty Illni-Swallow bus will meet us and take us to Covington, Indiana to participate in their parade at 3:00 p.m.. We then board the bus and head back to Indianapolis where we will take a dinner break at Fort Harrison while Ed Herran and Bob Wiker play a concert with the Indianapolis Symphonic Band. When the concert concludes, we will get back on the bus and head to Anderson, Indiana to participate in the country's official 1st fourth of July parade that steps off at 12 midnight on Sunday July 4th. When we finish the parade, we will then return to Camp Belzer (approximately 2:30 am). We will charge everyone $20.00 which will cover the bus, a lunch and dinner meal.

Dixieland to Play at Cookout on Circle
The Dixieland Band has been requested to play at the Council's annual Cookout on the Circle. This is scheduled for Thursday June 17th and you will need to report at 11:15 am to begin playing by 11:30. You will be done by 1:00 p.m. More information at rehearsals and newsletters!
Columbus, Indiana parade June 19th
The band has accepted an invitation to participate in the Indiana Volunteer Firefighters State Convention Parade in Columbus, Indiana on Saturday June 19th. You need to report to the Cummins Corporate Headquarters by 11:15 am on the 19th. They are located at 5th & Brown Street in Columbus. We could use all the help we can get on this -- both musicians and flag carriers. Mark June 19th on your calendar.
Fishers Freedom day Festival Parade
The band has accepted the invitation to participate in the Fishers Freedom Festival Parade on Sunday June 27th. This parade is usually in the evening (around 5 pm last year). We discussed at board meeting that this Sunday (June 27th) will also be the last rehearsal Sunday prior to tour so we are making arrangements to have a "rehearsal" / concert in the Fishers area prior to the parade.
Tour Special rehearsal and Load Day
Those going on tour, need to mark Thursday July 8th on your calendars. As was suggested from last year's tour evaluations we will have a last minute rehearsal just prior to our departure so our first concert will sound as good as our last concert. We are scheduling a rehearsal for 6:30 p.m. at Camp Belzer and following rehearsal we can load instruments and sleeping gear in the truck so we won't have that chore to do on Saturday morning.
Billy Graham Event at Dome
Our booth (142) will be open for the four day Billy Graham Crusade -- June 3,4,5 and 6. The report times for Thursday & Friday is 4:30 pm, Saturday at 8:30 am and again at 4:30 pm, Sunday at 4:30 pm. Call Sylvia (897-3809) if you can work these events. This is another opportunity to put some money in your accounts before tour!
